What are some books that you only chose because of limited options and ended up loving/devouring? Examples for me are Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marrillier and The Time Travelers wife – both purchased in bookstores at train stations (pre-smartphone) and transported me to another world. Do people still have that experience?

    1. All Creatures Great and Small and the others in that series. I thought it’d be sappy but it’s quite entertaining and educational partaking to life in that era. An oldie but a goodie

    2. Dungeon Crawler Carl. Definitely not my usual tropes but it (particularly the audio version) sucked me in I went through all 7 books in a year (it would have been quicker except I had to wait for the last one to release).

    3. Idk about “never would have read”, but I read *Day of the Jackal* because I learned about some guy named “Carlos the Jackal”. And I read *Johny Got His Gun* because of Metallica. And both books ended up being awesome.

Decent movies too, as it turned out.

    4. I grabbed Margo’s Got Money Troubles because I wanted to fill a book of the month box. My only reasoning was just “I probably won’t hate it and if I do it’s short.” Was expecting maybe 3.5 stars at best but I adored it.

    5. In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. If I’d known what it was about, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up, but I went in blind based on a recommendation and it was fascinating.

    6. An airport copy of Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage began my love for Murakami.

Got stuck in SeaTac for a few extra hours due to a delayed flight and picked it up. I’m infinitely grateful for little moments like these!

      Blood Slaves by Markus Redmond

The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi

      The Measure by Nikki Erlick

Bat Eater And Other Names For Cora Zeng

Maybe it’s an exaggeration to say I never would have read these, but I read them all for the 2025 Goodreads challenges, often when they were one of, if not, the only options I had
