I like to buy my nephews a little gift and a new book at the start of every school year. The oldest is starting 6th grade, doesn’t like non-fiction, and loves history. Does anyone have any ideas for a middle-grade history book? I could’ve sworn I read a book called “They Didn’t Teach Me That in My American History Class” as a kid but I can’t find any trace of it now. Thanks!

For a 6 grader, I would recommend something light. I read Harry Potter when I was that age and I absolutely loved it back then.
The Horrible Histories books could be of interest.
I remembered a whole set of books I loved growing up in the ‘60s and it looks like they’re still around
The “We were there…” series was (is?) fun. I think they’re just what you’re looking for.

Wait, if he doesn’t like non-fiction, history books like the one you mention are non-fiction. Are you looking for historical fiction instead?
For a kid who loves history, non-fic is usually the go to winner. For his age, Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb or Bomb by Steve Sheinkin are both excellent books about specific events in history that read like thrillers.
If you really want to avoid non-fiction, historical fiction that might work could be some of the Ruta Sepetys books, Heroes by Robert Cormier, Fever or Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, or The Watsons Go to Birmingham. I
If he loves history though, I’d really just get him a banger of a non-fiction book.
