Hello! My mom (55) recently became an empty-nester and has been rediscovering a lot of her old hobbies that she never really had time for. She's trying to get back into reading but struggles to find books. She told me that she feels like so many books these days are about young people or coming of age stories and she can't relate, so anything with a protagonist at least in their 30s and older is preferred. She's not interested in fantasy, sci fi, or anything like that. Authors that I know she likes are Wally Lamb, Gabrielle Zevin, and John Irving. She loved Lessons in Chemistry and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. Any recommendations are appreciated!

I feel like I recommend her all the time but really any of Elizabeth Strout’s novels. Particularly the Olive Kitteredge books. Just unbelievably well written slice of life literary fiction.
Richard Russo books like Nobody’s Fool
All Fours by Miranda July
Although the characters are much older than your mom, she might still enjoy “The Thursday Murder Club” series by Richard Osman.
Unsheltered, Barbara Kingsolver
A Thousand Acres, Jane Smiley
