Literary, engaging, fast pace, good characters

Hi,

Looking for some recs for absorbing books as I will be recovering from a surgery.

Some of my favorites:
– Station Eleven
– A visit from the goon squad
– Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow
– Intermezzo
– A Theory of Bastards

I’m not into stuff that is overly descriptive or self-consciously intellectual.

I’m fine with any genre. A subtle sci-fi theme is cool but not looking for explicitly “sci-fi” or fantasy books.

Any ideas?
