I've been listening to more audiobooks, and I'm trying to decide if I should count them as "read books." I've been getting active on GoodReads, but it kinda feels like cheating to list them as "Read" because I didn't technically read them. I either read a book or listen to the audiobook, never both.

    What do you guys think?

    1. I personally consider them read even if not everyone does. Just because someone else read the book to me doesn’t mean I got something different out of it. It’s honestly the only way I got through *Lord of the Rings* and other classic books.

    2. You have full permission and authorization to mark any book read, whenever and however you choose. I read dozens of audiobooks a year

    3. Your brain can’t tell the difference. If your brain can’t tell the difference then there is no difference.

    4. No. Youve consumed content and understand the subject matter. You did not read. Reading is a verb. I dont know why people get stuck on this lol.

Yes. I don’t have anything to prove. I know how to read. If I do an audiobook instead for some books I can’t imagine why that shouldn’t count. I usually don’t because I struggle to focus on audiobooks, but others have the opposite problem and audiobooks help then focus. Reading isn’t a contest. Any way you find to enjoy the stories is fine.

I count it as “reading”. It requires concentration and thought and I can honestly say I’ve gotten a lot out of audiobooks just as I have books that I have read in the traditional sense.
