I just finished a novel that moves between New York and Barcelona, and what really stayed with me was how different the two places felt,New York came across as cold and detached, while Barcelona felt warm and nostalgic. It honestly felt like the cities themselves were driving the story just as much as the characters.
It got me wondering, have you read any books where the setting almost feels alive, like another character in the story?

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
I love *The New York Trilogy* by Paul Auster and *Chronic City* by Jonathan Lethem.
The mods will probably remove your post, but you can post this on /r/suggestmeabook
A Gentleman in Moscow (country, hotel)
The Shining (hotel)
The Stand (world)
If we want to answer this very literally, The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin
Confederacy of Dunces
The Belly of Paris by Zola
Definitely *The City and the City* by China Mieville
And *IT* by Stephen King
Dublin in Ulysses. Knoxville in Suttree. Llareggub in Under Milk Wood. Comala in Pedro Paramo. To some extent every town or village in The Sheltering Sky.
The Night Circus, for sure. The only reason I kept reading was for the descriptions of the circus.
Ankh-Morpork City in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels especially the ones about the Nightwatch.
