Just what it says on the tin. I'm not looking for a book that goes on too many tangents or reads like a smorgasbord of related science topics. I'd like any books that largely confine themselves to focusing on one topic without filler. Any book that assumes broad familiarity with the topic is ok. The book can be long or complex, as long as it is informative and current. Thanks in advance for any replies!

The Emperor Of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee is about cancer
Mary Roach’s books each focus on a different topic (Stiff is about cadavers, Bonk is about sex, Grunt is about war, etc) and she is very entertaining and informative.
*The Making of the Atomic Bomb* by Richard Rhodes.
The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean goes through the periodic table and the role each element has played in human culture.
Trilobite! Eyewitness to Evolution by Richard Fortney is all about – trilobites! It was published in 2000 but is such a niche topic that I’m not sure anything more recent has been written. It was an entertaining read!
