I want to read about so-called low-lifes, drunks, incestuous families, criminals, junkies, "working girls" etc.By that I don't mean "bad" people but rather underprivileged and underserved people who, through choice or not, have eluded the normal bourgeois categories. I read The Mars Room and loved it. Something in that vein would be great; bonus points if the book can keep up with Rachel Kushner's just-the-right-level-of-ornate prose. Thanks y'all!

You might try Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. About a kid falling through the cracks in Appalachia.
The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead is about a “school” for troubled boys during desegregation.
Winter’s Bone by Daniel Woodrell.
If you’re down for chatty nonfiction, check out Low Life by Lucy Sante. It’s about NYC.
