George R.R. Martin: “Don’t be too impatient, it’s only been 12 years since the last one”

    1. I’ve given up. Stannis will probably remain in that little hut forever.

    2. I love GRRM interviews because it always ends up with r/Books leaving 4k comments about how they don’t care when there’s nothing they care more about than this book coming out.

So for every ”I/nobody cares anymore, the hype is dead”… you’re here for a reason, bud.

    3. I’m just curious if it ever does come out, who will narrate the audiobook? Roy Dortice passed some time ago so they need to find someone else. I suppose Harry Loyd could do it since he narrated the Dunk and Egg book.

Edit: personally I’d like to see Johnathan Keeble or Gildart Jackson.

    4. It’s so long I have probably forgotten too much of the story for being able to continue reading and know what I am reading about.

    5. When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then *The Winds of Winter* will be published, and not before.

If/when books 6 and 7 come out, I’ll definitely read them. And I’ll probably re-read books 1-5 to remember and get caught up on the series.

But, I have no expectations to ever see the final two books released. I recommend ASOIAF to all my friends with the understanding that the series will likely never be finished.

All jokes and anger aside, I’m really just baffled by how long this has taken. Like, even if he is tired of the universe, or if he has hit writers block, you’d think at some point he’d just say “fuck it” and power through so he doesn’t have to deal this series or fan base anymore. He’s just prolonging his own torment at this point.

This ends with both George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss passing away in mysterious circumstances and then Brandon Sanderson comes in and finishes each series with 3 more books.

    9. > in fact, seeing Martin give interviews is kind of encouraging, because it indicates to me that he’s confident enough about his progress that he’s willing to take a minute to do something fun.

I think the person who wrote this article hasn’t been following GRRM very long.

I’ve said it on this sub before, but If TWOW was something he actually passionately cared about, he’ll have finished years ago. It’s very understandable that the Meereenese knot and other narrative clogs is causing him headaches but for fuck’s sake, can anyone seriously argue that those sort of issues take over 12 years to reasonably solve?? Anyone? He’s had nothing but time to write. He just doesn’t care enough.

I’m happy for his success and want him to live peacefully and content. I owe a lot to the guy and will forever cherish his works, but it’s time people face facts and accept he doesn’t have the juice anymore. I realise I’m likely preaching to the choir on this sub, however.

Jokes on you, GRRM! I’ve moved on to the Kingkiller Chronicles. Only on the first book but I’m sure Patrick Rothfuss won’t let me down like you have!

    12. Ipuncholdpeople on

I seriously wish he’d just say he’s given up and we aren’t getting it. Stop teasing people

    13. Everyone should have moved on. There is a ton of great literature out there, no reason to wait for Martin.

I went to a special ‘In Conversation With’ kind of thing with GRRM, where he spoke about the series, as well as the profound success of the TV show. This was at the fancy Bell Lightbox in Toronto, Canada, home base of the Toronto International Film Festival. At the end, he read aloud the entire prologue for Winds of Winter, which took maybe 20 minutes. It was a really cool experience, and everyone had an opportunity to have him sign a book they brought. This was now over 10 years ago, just after the 2nd season finished I think. Makes me sad.

Don’t worry George, I have given up hope that you are even working on it.

    16. iamagainstit on

I don’t think anyone is really impatient at this point. More likely they have just given up hope on ever seeing the series completed.

    17. I said it before and I say it now.

When he dies his laptop will be found with a single file on the desktop. Book.txt.

It will just say “GET FUCKED”, last changed 2012.

      Mark my words.

    18. DancesCloseToTheFire on

At this point I just want the guy to admit he just doesn’t want to write ASoIaF anymore. Just come clean, give us some of the cliff notes of what was planned further down the line, free us and yourself to do your own thing.

    19. Puzzleheaded-Trust91 on

People defend him saying he doesn’t owe fans anything, fair enough. Personally I feel that earning money off getting people invested in a story, and then not bothering to finish that story once you’ve made your millions, feels morally wrong.

    20. I get that he’s trying to be light hearted about something he knows his fans want, but I am so done with George’s shit. As far as I’m concerned, George sold his soul to try and become a cultural icon like Tolkien. He wanted to be that world building guy that creates a legacy that will last through the ages, but he forgot that Tolkien actually FINISHED HIS DAMN BOOKS. Instead of telling the story of ASOIAF and then building on the world from there, he told half the story and then jumped straight into world building.

Now, I’m convinced he’s screwed himself on cementing the legacy he so clearly wants. He laid out the story so well in the first five books, that fans were able to guess a lot of the events that were supposed to happen in books 6 & 7, and he got salty that he couldn’t “shock” people anymore. Well George, that’s what happens when you give people an amazingly crafted story and 12 years to think about where the ending might go.

When house of the dragon came out, I decided that I would no longer support any of GRRM’s work until Winds was released. This man does not get another penny of my money or a second of my attention until he stops chasing the dollars and finishes the damn story.

I needed to get that rant out. Forgive me.

I would say that saying “people don’t care anymore” isn’t quite accurate. It’s more like, they stopped waiting. It’s like with that one friend, that keeps on insisting he will come over once he is in town again, he sometimes sends texts “maybe I’ll make it today” or “next wednesday I have business in that area” just to get disappointed over and over again “traffic was crazy”, “my cat threw up” or “I just wasn’t having any energy left”.

You get used to both the announcments and excuses and at some point, you’ll just accept that it is how it is. Maybe one day he will actually be at your front door and you let him in, you have a good time, catch up on past events and laugh about it. But you stopped actually making room in your days for the time he announced, you no longer grab a spare bottle of wine for the potential visit, you won’t vacuum the couch on that particular day he said he would come. But that doesnt mean you don’t care for him. You had a great time back in school, been through a hell of a time while college and your wives keep in touch regularly. You like him, you care for his well-being. But if it so happens that you will actually never see him again, you’ve already come to your inner peace and accepted the fact, that your meaningful relation is a thing of the past. Everything else that happens in the present and future is extra, bonus. You don’t lose sleep over it, although you sometimes dream about it

    22. MrStayPuft245 on

Yea and nobody cares now. It’s far too late and you’ll likely be dead before you finish at this pace.

I have nothing against GRRM, but I feel like 75% of the hate he gets is because he puts himself in that position by NEVER shutting his mouth and bragging about the 64738373 other things he’s working on besides finishing GoT.

    23. aviatoraway1 on

      Fun fact:

Brandon Sanderson has published more words since the last ASOIAF book released than GRRM has published in his entire 50 year career.

    24. I would honestly like to read the books, but I refuse to even start until they are finished. Why get emotionally invested in a series that will likely never see a conclusion from the original author?
