My gf and I are long distance and have been reading books together. She loves horror so a lot of our reads end up being in that genre. She suggested this book and I ended up reading the last 120 pages of it in one sitting. I can’t even remember the last time I did that.
The book’s structure and point of view is just so damn unique and switches around at just the right moment. There were two different pages in the book that had me audibly go “AUUGHHHHHH” in sheer disbelief and shock. It’s a relatively straightforward story when you take a step back but the twists come completely out of left field and the horror elements feel fresh and captivating. I especially LOVE one section towards the end that is a 2nd person perspective of the antagonist… just never something I thought I’d read in a horror novel. That little perspective change made every ending of every paragraph a butt clenching experience!
I really want to read more of Stephen Graham Jones now because of this novel. I was hungry for a good book about werewolves and heard of his werewolf book Mongrels first, but this one was the only book of his that my library carried. Now I can safely say I’m hooked and need to read everything this dude has written.
Also since a lot of the novel has references to the black feet Indian tribe, if anyone has cool recommendations on black feet or just any pantheon of tribes mythology and creatures, I’d love to read that.
