I was browsing a stall of second-hand books at my local supermarket and found the first book in the Long Earth series. It's been on my list for a while as I find the concept interesting but was putting it off as I'm not a huge fan of either author. Rummaging through the stall a bit further, I ended up finding all five books from the series and it's very obvious that books two to five have never been read.

I've since finished the first book and, while it had a lot of issues, it was enjoyable enough to want to continue reading and I'm now about 100 pages (around 20%) into book two. So far, nothing much has really happened but all the things I didn't like from the first book are jumping out at me here too, making it tough to want to keep reading. I'm not afraid to DNF a book as my TBR is huge but I'm keen to get a view from people who have read the series to see if it's worth continuing. I'd probably rate the first book as 3.5 out of 5 if that helps with context.

I really liked the premise, but it was kind of all there was?

I didn’t particularly like the world building outside the “hopping” idea, didn’t find the characters all that interesting, and it didn’t really examine anything in a harder sci-fi way. I read the whole thing, so I didn’t “hate” it, but it was kind of a filler read.
