I just finished my debut novel after a few years of quietly working on it between jobs and family life. I thought writing a romance would feel dreamy and cinematic, but honestly it was messy late nights, deleting whole chapters, and constantly doubting if anyone would care about these characters.

It surprised me how different it feels to read romance versus to write it. When I read, I fall into the emotion. When I write, I get stuck on things like pacing, dialogue, or whether silence between two characters feels authentic or flat.

For anyone here who’s also written in the genre you love to read: did you feel that same shift, like the magic became craft?

Of course. When you’re experiencing a story presented to you by someone else, you get to be surprised and entertained. When you’re creating it, you’re aware of all the technicalities that go into it. It’s like magic tricks, you know? Performing them yourself rather takes the magic out (although it can be fun in a different way).
