I’m a 20 year old who hasn’t read a book since highschool and I’m wanting to read some good books again but don’t know where to start. I’ve enjoyed fantasy and Sci fi books all my life but im also interested in reading historical books since I love learning about history or even fun stories. While in school I enjoyed books like into the wild and Frankenstien so im not too picky I just want something to get lost in. If anyone has anything they’ve enjoyed reading I’d appreciate a recommendation!

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. A wonderful blend of history, fantasy, and horror.

Have you played The Witcher games? You may like the books. And if you haven’t I’d still suggest checking them out! The main series technically starts with Blood of Elves, but I’d recommend starting with The Last Wish.

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. It is such an engaging story. Though I have been having a hard time finding anything else that has the same vibes as that one. I highly recommend it, especially if you want to get back into reading. It is harder to start reading again with a slow burn type book. Mount Char is fast paced and for that I think it would be a good first choice.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It’s a fictional story about the building of a cathedral in 1100s England. It’s a big meaty story with a ton of characters over a large span of time.

      A couple others:

      Shogun

      Lonesome Dove

I, Claudius and Claudius the God

    4. All fiction or historical fantasy recs: The Nickel Boys and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead (Jim Crow and slavery)

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due (historical horror)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and City of Thieves by David Benioff (WWII)

Circe by Madeline Miller (ancient Greece)

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara about the American Civil War, specifically Gettysburg. He really brings the personalities to life on both sides.
