Suggest me a book where the Protagonist is the villian and heros dont always win. This seems to be an exceedingly popular genre/trope. While I see more and more books with this description, I’m worried that they won’t all be done well.

I want to read a book where you can’t HELP but side with the villian and not just cuz they’re tall dark and handsome. I want to see heros who have no understanding of the negative ramification of their “heroic” actions. I want to see villians who are bad, but good where it counts.

(Edit: I should preface that I don’t mean hero and villian just in the sense of super heros. I’m more so looking for a kinda of, well, good vs darkness. I do read a lot of fantasy but am open to reading most genres)

    1. Sergeant-Snorty-Cake on

This is a doozy of an ask and I’m not sure if I have anything even with all that I read! The first thing that jumped to my mind was the graphic novel Superman Red Son by Mark Millar with Superman ending up as the right hand of Stalin. Blurb as follows:

“Imagine a reality where the world’s most powerful super-being does not grow up in Smallville, Kansas—or even America, for that matter…

Superman: Red Son is a vivid tale of Cold War paranoia, that reveals how the ship carrying the infant who would later be known as Superman lands in the midst of the 1950s Soviet Union. Raised on a collective, the infant grows up and becomes a symbol to the Soviet people, and the world changes drastically from what we know – bringing Superman into conflict with Batman, Lex Luthor and many others.”

    2. Just don’t finish the book! Reminds me of a 50 cent song(lol) “i watch gangsta flicks and root for the bad guy. Turn it off before the end cause the bad guy die”
