Hello everyone, I’ve recently finished Jane Austins work and the entirety of War and Peace and it’s led me to want to read more classic literature.

However, due to obvious differences in social constructs of the time, I find it difficult to find a book where there are fully developed female characters and that grates on me at the moment.

I’m looking for books with developed female characters, and mostly happy endings (I don’t have time to slide into a post-book depression right now).

Please let me know your recommendations, thanks!

Jane Eyre!! Very complex female protagonist with internal and external struggles.

    2. The tenant of wildfell hall by Anne Brontë – the largest part of the book focuses on telling the backstory of the female character.

Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy – the female character and her emotions are the main focus. But if I remember correctly, there isn’t a happy ending

Middlemarch by George Elliot – it is quite a long book but it focuses equally on the male and female characters and their respective problems

The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery. The female MC leaps off the page right into your brain, and she’s still completely relatable a century after publishing.
