Looking for reading suggestions to dilute the lovely Larry who I've been binging on since Christmas. I've done Cormac and found him a little bitter and his personal life a bit offputting, though Suttree was good. I love Steinbeck, and Dee Brown and Joseph Heller, – basically character-led stories rather than plot necessarily, doesn't need to be a western but with a good dry humour preferably… Any suggestions? I've not read a lot of Canadians, so any recommendations from ye north would be great.

If you also like Steinbeck and Heller, have you given Vonnegut a shot?
The Sportswriter, by Richard Ford
True Grit was a quick fun read. Didn’t have the depth obviously, but somehow it fits in there.
How about anything by Annie Proulx?
