Preferably with a diverse cast and/ or written by a bipoc author! I just miss the feeling of reading fantasy book series as a kid and just falling in love with all of the characters— even the villains— but most of the 5 star fantasy books I’ve read in the last few years have either been a little too dark or standalone that didn’t really give me enough time with the cast… any recs?

Check out Octavia Butler. Parable series and patternist series and several standalone works. She does have a lot of connection between them of characters.
Hugo and award-winning.
And she’s definitely fantasy, but if he wants sci-fi, that is somewhat uplifting and fun both check out David Brin. Can’t go wrong with sentient dolphins on the run from galactic horde while being protected by a talking head of broccoli.
House on the Cerulean Sea! The audiobook is really cute, with fun voices for the characters, but just as nice in written form.
