I’m not sure philosophical is exactly the right word, but I can’t think of a better descriptor for what I’m looking for. I want complex characters and beautiful prose that makes me think. Bonus points for an interesting framing device. I’m a sucker for non-linear story-telling. Some of my all-time favorites are:
The Fifth Season
Kindred
Piranesi
Cloud Cuckoo Land
The Dispossessed
Recursion
I’ve read other books by these authors, but these are my favorites. Weird is fine. Romance is fine as long as it’s not too romance-forward (I’m looking at you, Ministry of Time). Dark is fine, but I’m not big on grimdark. Funny is fine, but I’ve already read Hitchhiker’s Guide and am working my way through Discworld. I’ve already read Dune and Ender’s Game.
