My son will be 3 in a few months and I’m always looking for new books for him. We read Pete the Cat and a ton of Seuss when he was newly 1 for reference (and most things by PD Eastman too.) Same for Little Blue Truck and similar things — we read a lot over here. With the exception of Seuss, I’d say he’s outgrown all of these though he still likes them and we still reread many of his favorites. His favorite series lately have been Curious George and Frog and Toad; he can easily sit through the 80+ pages of “Curious George Flies a Kite” and wants more. I’d love to find more chapter books that still have some pictures, though, similar to Frog the Toad. It would also be nice to find series, though not opposed to single standalone book suggestions either.

The Cool Beans, Smart Cookie, Bad Seed, etc
Julia Donaldson’s collection – The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child, Room on a Broom, Snail on a Whale…The Everywhere Bear. They aren’t chapter books but they are lovely, so well written, beautifully illustrated. We read these on and off until just recently and my kiddos are over 9 years old.
The Princess in Black series is a chapter books series with lots of great pictures. Great for boys and girls.
The Mercy Watson series is also a good chapter book series with lots of pictures. It’s so cute and funny but with really nice writing. There are also related non-picture books in the same universe as Mercy Watson to grow into.
