I love books about what has always been referred to in my head as the inevitability of human connection. Don't get me wrong, I love stories like this with actual human characters too, but something about fantasy, monsters, sci-fi. Non-human characters experiencing love and joy and anguish and just. Being human for lack of a better term. Robots developing autonomy and emotions, fairies who feel so differently than humans, monsters learning to love and to hate, non-human characters finding community, be it with humans or with other creatures. Honestly, my preferred genre for this is sci-fi, but I'll take anything. Bonus if it's queer.
Some examples-
Out of the Drowning Deep by A.C. Wise (sci-fi fantasy)
Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell (horror-ish. protag is a monster)
King's Dark Tidings (human but still fantasy, protag raised as a weapon)
ykw? I'm including Frankenstein by Mary Shelley too.
