Im looking for romances written in the 19th century (preferably, as i don't know how steamy books in that time period tend to get) with a lot of tension and yearning like Jane Eyre. I loved that book, but I want something a little steamier, if possible. I know modern authors have written much raunchier historical romances, but I don't want just straight up smut. I want period accurate courting and stuff, but also tension. idk if thats possible, but ill take any suggestions!

I really liked *The Vizard Mask* by Diana Norman. It takes place during the plague in London, and concerns actors and the culture around the theatre at the time. The FMC is very smart and canny and has to make a way for herself as an independent woman, even though she’s in love with the MMC.
