I am helping a friend look for books appropriate to a second or third grade reading level that touch on mountain biking, mountain climbing, camping, or any kind of outdoor adventure.
This kid is already competing in mountain biking and climbing cliff faces with his dad. He’s a bit hardcore for a 9 year old, so books that have a slightly scary or adventurous elements are absolutely appropriate, lol.
The idea is to find something he might like to read because the stories intersect with his interests, but we are also open to books that would just have general interest for an outdoorsy kid.
What suggestions do y’all have?

Holes ! That book was my favorite as a little kid.
Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet series. But they’ll probably have to read the first book again in school at some point.
A Week in The Woods by Andrew Clements. It’s about a kid struggling to adjust to a new school who goes on a wilderness adventure with his class. things go wrong when he gets in trouble and tries to run away.
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Rollicking tale, well told. Lots of dirt. lol
