I fucking love this subreddit. Y'all are my people. I can tell everyone here really cares about lot about writing, and I think that's awesome. So I wanna just ask y'all what's the best written work of fiction that you have ever read? I want this post to just be an excuse for people to gush about their favorite books. But I also wanna look for more books to analyze. I managed to find another PhD program and I'm specializing in literature analysis. I fucking love analyzing what makes good writing good, and I think this might be the best place to look for some of the best written books I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. Y'all always delivered to me some of the best books I've read in my life already, so I'm more than happy to receive more recommendations. I'm open to all genres except romance and I have no triggers. Go fucking crazy! Thank you so much for your recommendations in advance. I love y'all <3

Kafka on the shore
One of the finest authors I’ve come across is Wallace Stegner. He taught Larry McMurtry and somehow, though he earned a Pulitzer for one of his books, is now fairly unknown. You can pick from a variety of his work and find something great, but Angle of Repose is especially good.
I’m going to limit my choice to American authors since my first language is English. There are lots of great authors from around the world but something is always “lost in translation”. Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is that book for me. Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner is a close second.
