So I'm looking for a book that primarily focues on the aftermath of the heroes defeating the big evil empire. I want the book or books to focus on how people live work and die in the aftermath, how do the surviving POWs get released/demobilised? What do the heroes do to rebuild/reconcile after their ultimate victory. Will there be holdouts and how do the heroe deal with them

Sort of like Peackeepeer's of Sol where the entire story takes place after the victory of humanity against the evil empire.

I would prefer if the recommended book is science fiction, but fantasy works as well

It’s fantasy, but the Lands of the Firstborn series by Gareth Hanrahan has this premise. It’s a “what if the fellowship had moved into Minas Morgul” story
