Fictional books about motherhood, the weirder and more raw the better.
Looking for fictional books about women and motherhood, more specifically raw/feral/weird experiences, i.e. Nightbitch. Also would accept any more mainstream fiction books dealing with postpartum/early motherhood. Thanks in advance!
Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova is pretty weird but as a warning the child dies early on in the novel

Both of these deal with some rough situations(one comes with trigger warnings from the author, the other does not) but I recommend both.
The Fifth Season by N.K Jemisin
Goddess of the River by Vaishnavi Patel
Both warnings are Child death
Another good one is The Bloodsworn Saga by John Gwynne. Orka is the GOAT

Oh, weird mom books are my jam!
The Push

The Need
The Hum

*The Awakening* by Kate Chopin, might not be quite as weird and raw as you’d like but is a beautiful book, in part about a young mother turning away from the motherhood role as prescribed.
For more overtly weird, specifically a woman becoming a de facto mother to unusual children, try the wonderful *Nothing to See Here* by Kevin Wilson.

Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy – I cannot recommend this book enough. It made me sob.

I feel like I’m always recommending Chouette by Claire Oshetsky.
