I’m the director of a very small rural library. Our yearly budget for books is $1,500 so I need to make each one count. What are some you think are a must have for a library?
This totally depends on your constituency. You may want to ask over at r/libraries, etc. for how to figure out collection development for your specific area/users.

Given political attitudes toward libraries these days, I think a lot of this depends on where you are. You don’t want to spend money on books someone might insist you get rid of.

Arbitrary but 500 to build a collection of ‘classics’ and 1000 for the currently popular your average patron wants to read. There are many kinds of readers and your job is to try and serve them all: Don Quixote and Moby Dick to the latest Harlequin romance.
