Anyone here ever read a book that you enjoy the setting, the majority of the characters, as well as the plot. Then the MC steps in and just rubs you the wrong way?

For me, the book is called He Who Fights With Monsters and the MC's name is Jason Asano. The cringiest, neck beardiest sounding character I've ever tolerated so i could finish an otherwise decent book.

Main character no but sometimes a series can take a turn for the worst and then it’s tough to continue.

Keroauc is an irresponsible, selfish, uncaring, holier than thou psuedo intellectual alcholic, but that’s the point of his novels. To show how destructive his beat way of life is.

As much as I’d hate to know Kerouac personally he makes for an interesting character study.

    3. Not despise, but I really think Fitz is an idiot in the Farseer Trilogy lol. I know the point is to show a human and flawed character instead of a perfect one, but goddamnit that fool (intended reference) keeps making wrong decisions all the damn time and its actually infuriating. I would hate Fitz if I met him

    4. Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment has Rodion Raskolnikov as the main character. He is arrogant, emotionally detached, and self-deluded intellectual who commits a crime based on a flawed philosophy and is tormented by the very guilt he believed himself to be above.

    5. I kinda like the His Dark Materials series, but the protagonist Lyra is so unlikable. She’s a liar and she was initially mean to poor kids in her neighborhood.

    6. Empire of Silence was okay but my God was the protagonist an annoying, idiotic, melodramatic whinger.
