Books where the main character witnesses someone elses’ descent to madness?

I can name multiple works in which the main character is the one who falls into a dark mental state, but I am a bit stumped on works, not necessarily books but also poems and literally anything else anyone can name, in which the main character is to witness someone they're close to or a peer deteriorate psychologically.
