I'm halfway through Assassin's Quest (please don't spoil me!), and man it's been a rough book. FitzChivalry has been nonstop suffering ever since, like, the middlepoint of Royal Assassin. Specially in this book. Every time there's a smidge of a good thing he gets messed up and barely survives

Don't get me wrong, I still love the trilogy! This book included. The writing's impeccable, and the characters are lovely. I never thought I'd miss someone as much as Lady Patience in this first half of the book

But the misery makes it a slow, slow read.

I'm not asking if Assassin's Quest gets better (I don't think it will). I'm asking if the second trilogy based on that world, the Liveship Traders, is as miserable as this one.

I've heard it's the best of Hobb's works. But I'm afraid I might get sick of the bleakness if I read another trilogy with the same level of pain as this one. If it is like that, I think I'll wait for a bit until getting myself back into this world

    1. Liveship is definitely not as bleak, although the characters still do Go Through Some Things.

It took me half a year to read the FarSeer trilogy, and only two weeks to devour Liveship, if that helps

I can’t remember the specifics of each series within that arc but I sure do feel like they were pretty bleak, increasingly so, and I did not enjoy the ending at all.
