    1. *A People’s History of the United States* by Howard Zinn is academic, but approachable (my high school used it in tandem with the district text book).

I read a book recently, that many on here are probably not gonna like. lol but allow me try and sell it to you.

“Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of new orleans.” It touches a lot of “American spirit”

Andrew Jackson was a racist, bigot but very much embodied the American fighting spirit of that time and era. But when push come to shove, he unified multiple races and cultures to fight a common enemy. The British. It took place in the war of 1812. It speaks of the hatred of the British and the Indians that became their ally’s. He took a bunch of volunteers and and obliterated what was a supposed to be an army far above his weight class. Men like him built this country. But men like him also did very very wrong. It was a different time, different era. It’s worth the read I can’t recall how many translators were needed. From what I recall, creole, Spanish, and three different Indian tribes were allied to him, the Choctaw, lower creek and Cherokee. Which he screwed over each one of them. Nothing says America more than this guy. Wise, vengeful, ambitious and and a very very flawed man.

He was able to unify a mix of races and cultures when America needed it…. When 9/11 Happened everyone forgot racism and hatred for one another and just saw each other as Americans. That’s this book.
