Hi! I'm looking for some help. I am on hunt for a few books to read based on Japanese folklore, myths or legends.

Mostly read fantasy and sci-fi with some history but looking for any genre.

If examples are helpful, similar to how Uprooted by Naomi Novik is based on Eastern European folklore.

    1. A Thousand Steps into the Night by Traci Chee

      Kindling by Traci Chee

      Half World by Hiromi Goto

I’ll rec The Memory Eaters by Janice Tay and The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo, and Jessica Amanda Salmonson’s Tomoe Gozen trilogy, although none of these authors are Japanese.

    3. ThePhoenixOfDoom on

The fox wife by Yangsze Choo. While it’s mostly set in China… in the year 1908, they also travel to Japan for a bit, it has 2 main storylines that intertwine quite nicely. It follows a woman, that is a shapeshifting fox (can turn into a human and back into a fox)… so yk fox spirits and all… anyways I REALLY recommend reading the summary or something so you can get a better feel for what it’s about. I really liked it and it’s in my top 3 books i’ve read so far. 🙂

EDIT: I’m also interested in east asian folklore, so i’ll write the names of the books that others have suggested me when i also made a post here.

EDIT 2: actually i hope this works
