Hey all, I actually loved Shogun, but kept waiting for the action to happen.
Is there an epic, kick-ass samurai classic war story that stands on a pedestal of books? I’m thinking of the movie “The Last Samurai” also. I really would love to read a samurai/shogun epic!

Lian Hearn’s Tales of the Otori is like the historical fantasy to Shogun’s historical fiction. The big battles are mostly in the second book onwards but the prequel and sequel to the trilogy both have huge battles.
The plot is basically this: A young boy named Tomasu is part of a hidden religious sect in alt-history Japan when his people are massacred by warlord Iida Sadamu as a part of a series of pogroms. Tomasu is rescued by Sadamu’s rival, Shigeru of the Otori clan and is adopted into the clan as Takeo and raised to be a samurai. He begins to show hints of special powers belonging to the Tribe, a network of secretive spies and assassins, and is trained by Shigeru and a defected Tribe elder to assassinate Sadamu.
