Hi everyone! I have a friend who’s a really great guy. I’m a lesbian Mexican immigrant and he’s a white, Catholic, ultra conservative guy. Over our friendship he has been politically different than me on almost everything but also one of my dearest friends— we’ve created an environment where we can have civil political discourse and it is one of my favorite things on the planet. Now, we’re both graduating high school soon— moving on to both study political science. He’s really into sports (baseball mostly), his church, politics, learning (especially about different languages and cultures) and I would love to leave him with a book to maybe broaden his horizons, he’s become such a wonderful person to exchange ideas with over the years; he’s taught me so much and I’d like to think its mutual. Any recommendations? I want maybe a true story to teach him about the Hispanic experience? Something maybe with some Spanish in it (he’s close to fluent)? Or maybe something about the church’s role in Latin America (both the good and the bad)? I just really want to leave him with something that breaks him out of the college eco chamber I see him getting himself into. Any suggestions? I’m not trying to change him— I’m trying to continue what we’ve always done with love: exchange.
