So my kid and I do this thing where I read a long hard book during the day, and tell the story of it at bedtime as best I can from memory. I'm a pretty good storyteller if I do say myself, but I am about to finish our current tome and will need a new one soon. For reference, we have gone through:

    Poetic Eddas

    Journey to the West

    The Odyssey

    Grimm's Fairy Tales

    Saga of Cù Culhainn

    Beowulf

And are about to complete 1001 Arabian Nights.

Anything goes so long as it's long and has stood the test of time as a story. Note, kiddo is 8 but is pretty savvy as far as the gritty bits.

    1. Maybe Canterbury Tales? It might get a little boring for a kid, I dunno.

The Aeneid or The Iliad, if The Odyssey was a favorite.

Not quite as old but Candide by Voltaire.
