Context: My mother is 92 and has been a dedicated reader of the Romance genre (classic and well-written contemporary) for decades. Her reading material has always been uplifting.
Yesterday, completely out of the blue, she asked me to get her a copy of "1984." I have no idea what prompted this pivot into Dystopian fiction, but I’m ready to embrace her newfound interest in the genre.
Assuming she makes it all the way through the bleakness of 1984, what book should I recommend to her next?
I'm looking for a book that is:
- High Quality/Literary: She appreciates well-crafted prose.
- Engaging/Genre-Bending: Something that could logically follow a deep, serious read like "1984."
- Genre: Open to anything from Literary Fiction and Historical Fiction to a high-quality Thriller. Maybe more.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

I’m an indie publisher and our novel A Million Tomorrows by Kris Middaugh is a contemporary, literary romance.
It’s free on KU if you want to take a look and see if she’d like it.
Ebook everywhere and print on demand from Amazon and BN if you like physical books.
*Kallocain* by Karin Boye, originally published in 1940, well before *1984*.
*The Wall* by Marlen Haushofer
*Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe* by Fannie Flagg
Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury.
“Animal Farm” same author. Similar vibes
Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro
Check out _We_ by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It was an inspiration for _1984_.
