It's a long story, but I suddenly found myself homeschooling my almost 13 yo a couple of weeks ago. After going through her curriculum (we're using one of those online schools), I realized there's no novel study. So I want to get her a bunch of novels that are typically studied in 8th grade and have her read 20 minutes a day and discuss it with me (I'd read along with her). What are some good suggestions?
Thanks!

I teach LA for 8th graders and we are currently reading The Hobbit to look at Bilbo as the archetype for the Hero’s Journey.
Other options: The Called is Enemy by George Tekai is a graphic novel about Japanese Internment Camps. Very relevant!
The Giver is popular and I really like it. Number the Stars is another common one. I like Hatchet, some do it in 7, some in 8.
Some people still do The Outsiders or Where the Red Fern Grows, which are quite old.
