I am simultaneously driven to find out WHY everyone loves this book, however my brain does NOT like repetition NOR does it enjoy the excessive use of numbers. I get so wrapped up in thinking I need to remember all of the numbers and locations as if it is necessary to understand the ending or meaning of this story. I keep thinking Piranesi is a girl, and continuously have to remember he is a boy (I don't think it matters but who knows). Maybe I am just not smart enough to keep reading. I don't know WHY we must have the title repeated at the beginning of every section of the journal (the shit with the albatross) – is it really an ending that I will be walloped by? I was just going to look up spoilers but thought I would see if I could be encouraged to just finish the damn thing lol!! In other words, should I just quit 2/3 of the way through, or should I keep reading? Thank you for weighing in!!

    1. I think if you are not enjoying a book you should stop reading it, that being said I did enjoy Piranesi, I also did think that preconceptions going in hurt this book a lot, specially being a fairy hyped book on socials.

I think Piranesi is a big philosophical joke that makes sense if you’ve read a lot of philosophy and not a ton if you haven’t — it’s essentially asking “what if you got left in the platonic world of forms with no one else?”

    3. Sounds like you have similar feelings to me about the book. I finished it but my opinion never changed.

    4. I just DNF’d this. Couldn’t get into it, definitely couldn’t understand why so many people rave about it.

I kinda get what you mean, it could be a bit boring but I did like the ending personally and found it interesting

    6. I found it kinda forgettable. All I can really remember is the ending. Looking at my storygraph I gave it a 2.5

I mean you’ll understand it if you finish the book. But you don’t have to read a book you’re not enjoying

    8. It was a horrible book and I stopped before very long. If you don’t like a book find another!

Also, it’s not a “wallop” type of book. You’re not really supposed to be blown away by what happens. It’s about the journey, not the destination

    10. I stopped about 25% through. It just wasn’t for me. This sub made me think it was a masterpiece – I think my expectations were too high.

    11. I finished it but it was not my thing. I also didn’t enjoy Strange & Norell. I think she’s just not for me. It’s ok to not like it .

    12. I found much of the stuff you’re frustrated by part of the appeal; my only complaint was that on audio it made the numerical parts of the dates hard to track.

    13. If it really bothers you that much put it down. On the other hand, it is a short book and if you’re 2/3s through might want to see how it ends and then you can bring us your review of it.

If your not enjoying it then quit reading. The ending is the worst part of the book. Piranesi is enjoyable because the prose is amazing, the dialogue is excellent, the world is mysterious and intriguing, and above all, the protagonist sees the world is such a unique and delightful way. All of those things should be enjoyable from the beginning and do not become more enjoyable as the story progresses. The ending is serviceable but the weakest part of the book by far.

    15. Some books aren’t for everyone.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started Brandon Sanderson books thinking this will be the one to hook me but they never do.

Until this year when I read Mistborn. I get it now.

Just stop. And thank you for posting the weekly Piranesi hate thread. Constant hate threads are tired af.

I loved this book. To each their own.

    17. Honestly I read it and it was Just Okay and I really didn’t like the ending at all. If you’re not having fun, it’s not the book for you.
