me and my friend have been interested in werewolves for a while but every book we find is either shallow sexy alpha male or teen romance, which has its own merit in its own category, but we’re looking for something more focused on the werewolfism. basically, any book thats about werewolves that isnt just feel good romance. it doesn’t have to be strictly horror either! kind of desperate honestly, i’ll take anything!!

Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman
The Mercedes Thompson Series & The
Alpha and Omega series (connected to mercy Thompson) by Patricia Briggs
*Mongrels* by Stephen Graham Jones – an adolescent in a family of werewolves who has yet to undergo his first change. It discusses a lot of the perils and problems of lycanthropy and the family existing on the fringes of society due to their own need for secrecy and issues with interacting with ‘straight’ society.
You also might be interested in the tabletop roleplaying game *Werewolf: The Apocalypse* which has werewolves as a group (though different tribes) fighting a religious war to save the planet. It has lots of deep background and options – werewolves as kings, werewolves as the urban and rural poor, cultural traditions – Celtic, Norse, Native American etc. It tries to gather together a lot of the different werewolf myths and tropes and while it is of it’s time – very 90s/dawn of the Millenium it is very rich.
An outside recommendation for werewolves in fiction – Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series treats them well and in an interesting way – the most indepth coverage is in *The Fifth Elephant* – Coporal Angua of the Ankh Morpork City Watch (and werewolf) returns home to the family she fled; but to get the most out of it you might want to start with the book she’s introduced in – *Men at Arms*; or the first Watch novel *Guards! Guards!*
