I’ve been reading a lot of sci-fi lately and tried the mystery genre for the first time since I was a kid and I found it rather boring just being a simple murder mystery.

I think I’m more looking for something that is either horror or thriller, but with a sci-fi/fantasy monster theme.

The books from my youth that stand out are Paul Zindel’s Zone Unknown series. I’m looking for something similar but more mature

    1. Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant features killer mermaids. Her urban fantasy (as Seanan McGuire) InCryptid series features all kinds of cryptids.

If you want more monster adventure, John Scalzi’s The Kaiju Preservation Society was a fun read.

    2. Clive Barker’s ‘Books of Blood’ is a collection I recommend for its groundbreaking range of horror stories. Barker’s imagination knows no bounds, and this compilation showcases his ability to terrify and fascinate with tales that are both visceral and evocative.
