So I just got a job dealing with creative nonfiction, and I don't actually have a ton of experience with the genre, so I've been looking to read more of it to have more expertise! I'll take anything that is a) nonfiction, b) written in a particularly engaging style, and c) not super depressing and not super long (over 500 pages). So far I've really enjoyed the works of Tim Cahill and David Sedaris!
Not required, but bonus points if:
It's a collection of shorter nonfiction works
It's written by a woman, a nonwhite person, and/or a queer person
It's written by an author with a strong narrative voice
It combines personal stories with science/history
It's funny, especially if it combines humor with emotion
Thank you! I'm super excited to see what you all have for me!

Have you read any Joan Didion?
“Slouching Towards Bethlehem” is great.
Against Interpretation by Susan Sontag
If you liked Sedaris, maybe try Jenny Lawson. Her first book Let’s Pretend This Never Happened is the place to start, imo.
Or, you could try Gorey Details: Adventures from the Dark Side of Science by Erika Engelhaupt (if you’re not squeamish)
Quietly Hostile by Samantha Irby
We Will Be Jaguars by Nemonte Nenquimo
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
The Light Eaters by Zoe Schlanger
Mudlarking by Lara Maiklem
The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan
Old in Art School by Nell Painter
Bite by Bite by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
The Garden Against Time by Olivia Laing
