I read this on an annual basis (or more often) to remind myself that no single government (or indeed person!) has been able to impede the improvement of humanity’s condition over the last few centuries.
It’s not a law of nature but humanity (in the aggregate) is on the right path towards equality and dignity for all.

**The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined** – Steven Pinker (2011). A long (700 pages!), remarkable, and fascinating book on the decline of violence in human history. A bit controversial, but generally excellent.
Fiction is tougher; uplifting stories tend to be boring!
