For a horror story that combines the Gothic with the cosmic, ‘The Call of Cthulhu’ by H.P. Lovecraft is my top recommendation. Lovecraft’s tale of ancient gods and the insignificance of humanity in the vast cosmos is profoundly unsettling in its implications.
