Hello! Kid is getting into sci-fi. Reads quite a bit, mostly non-fiction. Vocabulary and diction is pretty advanced. Want to get him a sci-fi novel for his birthday – inspiration is The Expanse series. Any recommendations? Doesn't have to be YA, but can't contain adult romance.

Project hail mary is easy reading. Its as PG as any book ive ever read. But, two scientist literally say one time “we have sex” and that’s the entirety of any adult content.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein
Those are good places to start, then maybe Dune or Hyperion when your son gets older.
Stranger has some adult stuff, maybe Starship Troopers instead
I read Skyward by Brandon Sanderson when I was 12 and I loved it. It’s kind of like how to train your dragon mixed with top gun. I still read it every so often, it’s become something of a comfort book for me. It’s a series, but the first book still works well as a standalone novel if he doesn’t want to commit to a long series.
