My 83-year-old mom got into Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St. Mary's series 6 or 7 years ago and now I'm pretty sure it's the only thing she reads (in addition to the Time Police spin-off series). She loves them so much that she just keeps rereading them over and over. But recently she said something to me about maybe she should branch out and read something else. So I'd like to get her a book for her upcoming birthday.

I love time travel books & have a lot of faves in the genre, but I'm not sure I want to go quite so spot-on with my choice for her, because I don't think it's necessarily just the time-travel aspect that makes them such a hit for her. I think it's also the fast pace, rollicking humor, and strong female protagonist. Maybe the historical aspect too, but the humor/wackiness would need to be incorporated and that doesn't really seem like it's part of most historical fiction.

I thought about trying her on the Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn, but I wasn't sure if maybe it felt a little racy for me to feel comfortable sharing with my elderly mother 🙂

Definite yes for Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn! I don’t remember there being any smutty scenes, but I could just not be remembering correctly

Vera Wong series by Jesse Q. Sutanto. The first book is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers – your mom might like that the protagonist is of senior age

Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. The first book is All Systems Red. Novella length, but it’s quick and fast and funny
