I'm in a slump and can't seem to get out of it. Specifically, my attention span is SHORT at the moment but I need to get "back" into reading things other than romantasy so I can slow down my brain and read more academic texts without the need for an immediate dopamine hit. I have ADHD and need a strong plot. Here are some of my past preferences:

    Loved:

    – Kindred, Octavia Butler (enjoyed parable of the sower much less)

    – Poppy wars and babel, RF Kuang

    – Dictionary of lost words

    – Most things by Murakami and Vonnegut (though I think both would be a bit to slow for me to get pulled into right now)

    – Any romantasy, but trying to veer away from that

    – Invisible life of addie larue, a darker shade of magic, ve schwab

    – Shantaram, gregory david roberts (an aberration; not fantasy but multi-cultural and gripping)

    – Project hail mary, Andy Weir

    Did not love:

    – Katabasis, RF Kuang

    – The road (didn't like the writing)

    – Ministry of time

    – Discovery of witches (liked but got bored, could give another shot theoretically)

    – House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende (just too prosaic/rambling for me at the moment)

    – Shadow of the Wind, Ruiz Zafón (couldn't get into it–too slow, maybe? not sure why)

    – Anything that's too focused on war/action

    – Never let me go (theoretically liked, but the plot dragged for me)

I've heard things by Brandon Sanderson recommended a lot but for some reason the blurbs turn me off–maybe too action focused? I'm not sure. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated (except horror–not into horror)

If you liked Poppy War and are interested in a new trilogy, The Green Bones Saga (Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy) is one of my favourite trilogies out there.

The Daevabad Trilogy – (City of Brass etc.) would be another trilogy I’d recommend (a bit of romance though not heavy on it at all, magical realism, epic etc.). I don’t see it talked about nearly as much as it should – it was awesome from beginning to end.

If you want something small for now, Piranesi is a great short Fantasy read too
