Outside of academic requirements, I never really made a point to read.

I wanted to change that, so three weeks ago I started my journey.

I've since devoured "East of Eden", and "The Sirens of Titan". I couldn't put the books down as I was enthralled by their ability to use allegorical tales as a disguise for examining deeper, thought-provoking themes.

Based on my immediate love of Steinbeck and Vonnegut, what other books/authors can you suggest?

John Fowles: The Magus (my all time favourite novel) and The French Lieutenant’s Woman

Italo Calvino: If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller. This has the best first chapter ever.

Haruki Murakami: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Robert M. Pirsig: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Notoriously hard to get in to, but very rewarding if you stick it out.

      Donna Tartt: The Secret History

      Michael Ondaatje: The English Patient
