It has to have been published in the 21st century which is really limiting my search to be honest. I can choose the theme but I was thinking something along the lines of ambition/hubris or prejudice? I would really appreciate any help, thanks!!!

    1. Maybe Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi or Chicano Frankenstein by Daniel Olivas. I haven’t read either of them yet but they’ve been on my list for a while and both are retellings of Frankenstein through modern lenses, the first being the Iraq war, while the second deals with the US Mexican immigrant experience.

A Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock could also be an option? It’s not a direct retelling but has similar themes, about two gay Victorian men putting a sentient fungus in a dead woman’s body and trying to raise her like a child. It’s a debut with some tough edges but does touch on both ambition and prejudice.

    2. Ooh the 21st century bit makes this tricky and rules out a lot of my immediate recommendations. The Portrait by Iain Pears is the only one I’ve read recently that springs to mind. A revenge story full of anger. It’s not a direct comparison, but you could certainly draw on comparisons and contrasts. The main character is filled with hubris. And it’s a short read.

    3. How about Poor Things by Alasdair Gray? I haven’t read it, only seen the film, but it’s a modern retelling of Frankenstein and should be fun if it’s as good as the film.
