I always get my niece and nephew a book for their Christmas stocking. My nephew is a reader. My niece… not so much. BUT, if you can get her to start, she'll usually enjoy it.
She loved:
- One of Us is Lying Series (basically everything by this author)
- The Inheritance Games
She does not like any fantasy or sci-fi. She likes "real life" about teens with a bit of suspense and a bit of romance thrown in there. Something that would grab her right from the start. She won't stick with a book that has a slow start, it's got to really get going quickly. She'll be intimidated by anything that looks really long or heavy.
Any suggestions?

We Were Liars by e. lockhart (and sequel)
Seconding We Were Liars and adding A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
Older series, but the Tillerman books by Cynthia Voigt are great—starting with Homecoming
Babysitters Club?
Truly Devious and its sequels are really good mysteries
