I'm looking for book recommendations for my 12 year old. They love horror movies and generally dark and moody movies like Donnie Darko. They're a huge reader but have grown out of their witchy YA era and are looking for more creepy, folk horror, weird stuff but, because of their age, no obvious sex stuff. Also, they're non-binary, so queer representation is def a bonus! Thanks

I just finished The Last House on Needless Street and I loved it! No sex, no overt violence, but a lot of wtf is going on?! It hits the dark and moody vibes.
I probably don’t have to say this to a parent, but definitely research it before giving it to them just in case it’s too mature for a 12 year old. There are trigger warnings, but I don’t want to give any spoilers to others.
Down a Dark Hall by Lois Duncan. She wrote a lot of great, spooky YA books, but this one was my favorite, it has a kind of Shirley Jackson/Daphne Du Maurier feel to it.
