I'm looking for a book that is an autobiography or memoir of someone who lived in Germany or maybe Italy during WWII who wasn't part of targeted populations (so not Jewish, or Catholic, and also not part of the resistance). I guess I'm wondering if there's anything out there about a person's experience during WWII that was just a "bystander" for lack of a better word whose life changed because of the war but they were not in it… if that makes sense?
